“Gia Dinh Haha” Episode 17: Family is where no one is left behind

Episode 17 of “Gia Dinh Haha” depicts the journey of children returning from afar – a familial bond rarely achieved by any reality television program.

When Family Ties Transcend the Television Lens

The cold night by the fire became warmer with a gift exchange filled with laughter. Each gift was packed with complete love by the members. It was the signature "pink" mini gas stove given to Ms. Thong's family, English books, toy sets for little Thu and little Thang, and practical, warm clothing items. Every gift represented the members' sentiments for their "family" in Ban Lien.

The happiness of Ms. Thong's family upon receiving the gifts

During lunch, Jun Pham shared, “The grandmother also loves us very much, treating us like her own grandchildren, and also recounted the hardships that Mr. Ha and Ms. Thong had hidden from us.” Eldest Brother Thuan wished that the presence of the five siblings this time would truly become a spiritual pillar for the couple. “Perhaps the first time we came here, you were cheerful because you were afraid we would be sad, but since you have considered us as family, in the coming days, just feel free to share everything comfortably.” – The members are now like blood relatives, ready to share the burden and listen to the family's hidden hardships.

The True Meaning of "Family"

The highlight of this episode was Mr. Ha and Ms. Thong being away from home, handing over the “privilege” to the five siblings of “Gia Dinh Haha.” Becoming “unexpected” hosts, their response to that absolute trust was the image of a resourceful group, voluntarily managing all matters, big and small, with the mindset of family members. From preparing breakfast to taking the children to school,... everything unfolded rhythmically and sequentially, as if they had long belonged to the pace of life here.

In contrast to the freezing drizzle typical of the Northwest winter was an enthusiastic and serious working spirit, completing Ms. Thong's instructions even without supervision. The motivation for them to “brave the rain” to work stemmed from a sincere bond and a desire to share the burden with their family members.

The Kindness of the Farmer

When Mr. Ha and Ms. Thong returned in the afternoon, the whole family gathered on the porch to sort the bright yellow seed corn. From the ears of corn gnawed by rats, the story of the hardships faced by highland farmers unfolded.

The members attentively listened to Mr. Ha's sharing

Mr. Ha shared his helplessness when crops are destroyed, directly affecting the family's food supply and economy. Most precious of all was the farmer's steadfast attitude, “I wouldn't do that,” when asked about using chemical pesticides. Despite facing worries about his livelihood, he still cares about health and safe, clean food for both locals and visitors. Faced with this sincerity, “Gia Dinh Haha” gained even more appreciation for the efforts of the indigenous people.

Family is Where No One is Left Behind

Amidst the freezing drizzle throughout Ban Lien, a warm heart remained present. In the innocent thoughts of little Thang, a worry arose that when the older siblings left, the house would become empty. The usually quiet boy suddenly burst into tears as the fear of the impending separation made him unable to hold back his emotions. Thang's nod in response to Ms. Thong's question, “Are you afraid the uncles are going home, right?” showed that the affection “Gia Dinh Haha” devoted to this land has become a deeply intimate memory.

That familial love is also intertwined with the care given to the “little members.” For the past two days, Luong the kitten had been sick, constantly seeking warmth by the fire to lie down, leaving the members quite worried. In every gesture, there was always love for this “little member”: from patiently tearing small pieces of food so he could easily swallow, to the decision to build a “warm nest” exclusively for him. The new “house” provided Luong with a safer place to stay warm.

Eldest Brother Thuan, Second Brother Thien, and Third Brother Nam are building a house for little Luong

The nurturing and co-creation of a "peaceful sanctuary" - whether for humans or for the “little members” relying on the shelter of this roof - made it a place where every member equally deserves to be protected and feel a sense of belonging.
